Spinning up a Virtual, World-Class Supercomputer using Cloud Computing
In November 2019, SDSC researcher Frank Wuerthwein and his collaborators marshalled the resources of multiple commercial cloud computing providers to assemble a massive virtual supercomputer to solve a real world, multi-messenger astronomy computing problem. The computing run over a weekend utilized almost 52,000 graphics computing units (GPUs) to achieve computational scale rivaling the world’s most powerful supercomputers. Join us for breakfast and to hear about this achievement and what it portends for the future of supercomputing. There is no charge to attend. Conference room EB143 is located just inside the east lobby.
Presenters: Frank Wuerthwein and Igor Sfiligoi, SDSC/UC San Diego
